The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently posted online a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document regarding the handling of untreated sewage from Ebola patients. The FAQs address wastewater from healthcare facilities and Ebola virus survival in wastewater and drinking water. The product is a follow up to the interim guidance CDC released in November. In response to a question about the effectiveness of drinking water treatment systems against Ebola, CDC notes, “If Ebola were present in surface water supplies used for public consumption, it would likely be destroyed by chemical disinfection methods used at water treatment plants.” With regard to ground water supplies, CDC states, “Ebola is not expected to be found in untreated groundwater supplies in the absence of high levels of Ebola-contaminated sewage leaking directly into underground aquifers.”
