Strategic Moves In A Recovering Economy
If it seems that revenue goals, capital requirements and workforce objectives are moving targets in the current economy, then it’s time to develop some new strategic moves of your own. At AMWA’s 2010 Annual Meeting, you’ll find out how your colleagues are positioning their utilities to emerge stronger and sounder from the current downturn. Your own experiences, ideas and initiatives will be key components in a program that encourages peer exchange and promotes executive development. Here is the latest agenda:
- Surviving Recession and Emerging as Stronger Utilities – Utility executives from Cincinnati, Louisville, Atlanta and Southern California will discuss their recession coping strategies and the opportunities they identified to respond to economic challenges. A follow-up roundtable session will engage all participants.
- Balancing Financial Sufficiency with Community Sustainability and Conservation – Water system directors from Denver, Nashville, Henderson, Nev., and St. Johns County, Fla., will share their approaches to ensuring financial sufficiency while addressing sustainability, environmental stewardship, conservation and service affordability.
- Energy-Water Nexus from a Power Perspective – Jeffrey Fulgham, Chief Sustainability Officer at GE, will provide an alternate view of this challenging relationship.
- The Ever-Evolving Bond Market – Bankers fromMorgan Keegan & Company will discuss the current municipal bond climate and strategies for improving utilities’ opportunities in the bond market.
- When the Pipes Break – From a spectacular, harrowing main break to a high profile averted break, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission’s general manager has a story to tell about communicating the state of water infrastructure and public reaction.
- Insider Threats in a Recessionary Environment – Utility security officers will provide a tactical level overview of how the economic recession has enhanced the risks posed by insider threats and how utilities can improve their resilience.
- What We’ve Really Learned from a Decade of Asset Management – An early AM adopter, the City of Santa Rosa Utility Department, will provide insights from practical experience in assessing and proactively applying AM data to a range of utility decisions.
- Corporate Water Risk and Municipal Bonds – Sharlene Leuric, Senior Manager at Ceres, a coalition of investors and interest groups that addresses sustainability challenges, will preview the findings of a new study on corporate water risk and municipal bonds.
- AMWA Awards – The 2010 awards luncheon will honor recipients of AMWA’s Gold Awards for Exceptional Utility Performance and Platinum Awards for Utility Excellence, as well as the Donald R. Boyd and President’s Awards for individual contributions to the drinking water sector and the association.
- Reconnecting With Colleagues – Evening receptions on Tuesday and Sunday at the Green Valley Ranch Resort and a Monday evening reception at the Las Vegas Valley Water District’s Springs Preserve provide the perfect environments to relax and interact.
- Hoover Dam and Intake No. 3 Tour – Wednesday morning’s private tour will include both Hoover Dam and Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Intake No. 3, currently under construction to meet demand when Lake Mead’s elevation falls below current intakes.
