Join your colleagues March 17-20 in Washington, D.C. for AMWA’s 2013 Water Policy Conference. This year’s conference coincides with the opening of the 113th Congress and the start of President Obama's second term.
Monday, March 18 begins with a political analysis by National Public Radio’s Mara Liasson, followed by speeches from influential Administration officials on federal policies that could affect how metropolitan drinking water utilities do business. Peter Grevatt, EPA’s new Director of the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water, discusses the priorities of his office and upcoming regulatory efforts. Also, EPA Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe has been invited. Perciacepe is expected to become the Acting Administrator when Administrator Lisa Jackson leaves her post later this month.
Kathy Jacobs, Director of the National Climate Assessment at the U.S. Global Change Research Program, has tentatively agreed to speak about the assessment and what it says about water resource management challenges. White House Senior Director for Preparedness Brian Kamoie and DHS Undersecretary Rand Beers have been invited to discuss federal critical infrastructure protection and resiliency efforts for the water sector.
AMWA General Counsel Robert Saner discusses the status and possible outcomes of water conveyance and Clean Water Act permitting cases involving New York City, South Florida Water Management District and Los Angeles County.
Tuesday, March 19 features guests from Capitol Hill discussing legislation that could impact the water sector, including proposals to help communities prepare for extreme storm events, increase infrastructure funding, and comply with cybersecurity requirements. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the author of the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA), is joining us, as are Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Tex.) of the House Homeland Security Committee and Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.), Ranking Member of the House Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee.
Other invited members of Congress include House Environment and the Economy Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-Ill.) and Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.), author of the Water Infrastructure Resiliency and Sustainability Act.
Monday's luncheon will feature Susan Collet of the Bond Dealers of America, discussing the prospects of tax reform impacting the municipal bond tax exemption and advocacy efforts underway to protect it.
Executive and board meetings and a welcome reception are scheduled for Sunday, March 17. Receptions are also scheduled for Monday and Tuesday evenings, including an event at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.
