Source Water Protection

Source water protection is a core priority for AMWA members. The association supports protection, preservation and cleanup of this nation’s surface water resources through control of both point and nonpoint source pollution.  AMWA supports utilizing the watershed approach as the framework for bringing together all stakeholders to identify problems within a watershed and to solve water quality concerns.

Start A Conversation With Local Officials About Source Water Protection

The Source Water Collaborative has launched a new interactive tool to help organizations reach out to local officials and land use decision makers. The Your Water Your Decision tool at

www.yourwateryourdecision.org

helps users create a professional-looking guide that highlights their community or state’s specific source water protection needs by customizing subject matter, content, cover photos, contacts and resources.  In addition, organizations can brand their guide by adding their own logo and contact information – making the guide unique for every organization.  Use the guide to start a conversation with local officials about what can be done in your community by presenting best practices, people and resources that can help them protect their sources of drinking water.

Visit www.yourwateryourdecision.org to see how you can create your own customized guide that downloads to your desktop in under 15 minutes.

AMWA participates in the Source Water Collaborative (SWC), an organization of federal, state and local partners who have come together to further the goals of protecting sources of drinking water. SWC organizations recognize that resources are extremely limited, authorities are split, and the actors who can actually protect source waters are diffuse. Each organization recognizes the synergy of coordinated actions and the need for leveraging each other’s resources in order to increase the chances for success over each entity going it alone.

Ad-Hoc Source Water Protection Committee

Originally formed to develop the Source Water Protection Webcasts, AMWA's ad-hoc Source Water Protection (SWP) Committee provides feedback on SWC projects and other source water related issues where AMWA is involved. Members can find out more about the ad-hoc SWP committee by contacting Scott Biernat (biernat@amwa.net).

AMWA and EPA produced a series of three webcasts on source water protection topics in 2006.  All three are available for viewing here.

Webcast One focused on real-time reporting, raw water monitoring, emerging contaminants, source water protection plans, and long-term monitoring, trends, and data sharing.

Webcast Two discussed land development and its impact on source water protection.

Webcast Three addressed interagency and intercommunity outreach, coordination, and partnership campaigns.
