Water Efficiency Information

EPA Announces WaterSense Program





On June 12, 2006 EPA announced a new water efficiency effort called WaterSense. The program targets both consumer education and product certification.

AMWA Supports Funds For WaterSense Program

AMWA, along with other industry stakeholders, recently signed a letter to the chair and ranking member of the Senate Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee requesting $5 million in FY09 funds for EPA's WaterSense program.  A similar letter was sent to the Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee leaders in the House of Representatives.

AMWA Signs Letter Urging Stronger Water Efficiency Standards For Commercial Clothes Washers


AMWA and other stakeholders submitted comments to the Department of Energy in response to the Department's Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in support of stronger water efficiency standards for commercial clothes washers. The letter notes that improving efficient water use "is a critical strategy" for utilities in light of many challenges including meeting new regulations and maintaining and expanding infrastructure.

WaterSense Program Updates

The WaterSense program is moving ahead with new specifications and new products. To earn the WaterSense label, products must be independently tested and certified by a licensed certifying body to meet EPA's water efficiency and performance criteria.

  • Potential for significant water savings on a national level.
  • Equal or superior product performance compared to conventional models.
  • State of technology development—product categories that rely on a single, proprietary technology will not be eligible for the label.
  • Ability to measure and verify water savings and performance.
  • Cost-effectiveness.
