Mission, Activities, and Funding of the Steering Committee for Water Efficient Products

Approved 5-14-2004

I. Agreement in Principle

The Steering Committee for Water Efficient Products is a coalition of businesses, drinking water utilities, environmental advocates, and others with a common interest in promoting more efficient use of water. Committee members recognize that making efficient use of water is essential for the nation to meet its goals for safe and affordable drinking water and the restoration of water quality in rivers, lakes, and estuaries. The Steering Committee is dedicated to the establishment of a water-efficient product labeling program that is national in scope and that encompasses a wide range of consumer products and commercial equipment that use water. All committee members have endorsed the Position Statement in Support of a Voluntary Water Efficient Product Labeling Program.

II. 2004 Activities of the Steering Committee

The Steering Committee will do the following

  • Track and summarize EPA's efforts to assemble the contractors, analytic tools, and policies needed to launch a credible national labeling program for water-efficient products;
  • Communicate to EPA, DOE, and other federal officials on key program developments and funding requirements;
  • Encourage and influence EPA in its formative work toward a water labeling program;
  • Promote the first-time inclusion of water efficiency criteria as part of the eligibility criteria for an Energy Star label: residential clothes washers manufactured after January 1, 2007.
  • Encourage additional organizations to endorse the Position Statement to continue to broaden support for water-efficient product labeling
