AMWA has a sustainable events policy, where the association seeks to partner with our event hosts and minimize event environmental impacts. Read on to learn more about the sustainability measures taken by the DeSoto Hotel Savannah and AMWA for the 2022 Executive Management Conference.

The DeSoto's sustainability measures

  • Sustainable catering - The DeSoto kitchen features locally sourced, seasonal ingredients from the surrounding Lowcountry farms in culinary selections. The hotel's culinary team is committed to reducing food and other waste by recycling cooking oils, composting, and sending quality leftovers home with team members. The DeSoto also reduces plastic waste in catering by stocking packaged goods made from recycled materials and using single-use compostable materials, like plates and cutlery, where possible.
  • Reducing waste, energy consumption - Guests staying at the DeSoto will notice refillable dispensers in their rooms to reduce single use plastic toiletry items. Additionally, the DeSoto uses LED lighting and implements energy use awareness training with team members to reduce energy use.

AMWA’s commitment to sustainability at EMC

  • Reducing waste - This year, AMWA is notifying attendees that paper folders will no longer be available onsite. A QR code will be available at the registration desk to download the materials, and the materials will also be emailed to attendees in advance of the event.
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions - AMWA encourages attendees to consider the value of carbon offsets for travel to its meetings. If possible, attendees interested in carbon offsetting should consider pursuing offsetting as a conference fee with their organization. Many airlines show flight options ranked by emissions, and some even offer carbon offsets with the purchase of a flight. For those interested in choosing a program or specific project as an offset, there are organizations like Gold Standard and Terrapass that are committed to funding projects that combine carbon credits with sustainable development goals. Attendees from the east coast may even consider traveling by train, as Savannah is home to an Amtrak station
  • Reducing travel impactsAMWA continues to research and identify policies for reducing emissions in its daily operations and employee travel. For the 2022 EMC, the DeSoto Savannah Hotel is a short distance from the nearby airport and within walking distance of the beauty of Savannah, ensuring attendees won’t need to rely on private transportation for much of their business trip.
