AMWA Commemorates 40 Years Leading in and Serving the Water Sector

This year marks 40 years for AMWA as an association - but more than that, it is a celebration of the association’s history, staying true to its mission, and serving as the unified voice for the water utility executives of the nation’s largest publicly owned water systems.

While AMWA observes this tremendous milestone this year, the associations also salutes its members, board of directors, and the water sector. AMWA is proud to have played an integral role in the tremendous strides the water sector has taken over the course of the last four decades, and the association looks forward to the ongoing work to tackle some of the nation’s and sector’s toughest challenges over the next decades.

40 Years of Leadership

Over the course of 40 years, AMWA has distinguished itself as a leader in the water sector.  Below, AMWA provides snapshots of areas in which it has advanced key legislative, regulatory, sustainability, security, and management initiatives to improve access to safe, affordable, and clean drinking water.

Reflections on Our History

"For 40 years, AMWA has been a true champion for the water sector and has helped to raise the profile of our country's critical metropolitan systems," said New York City Department of Environmental Protection Deputy Commissioner Angela Licata, AMWA President. "AMWA staff has provided critical information and thought leadership on a broad range of issues, including cyber security, lead and copper, and other significant ever-evolving legislation and rules under the Safe Drinking Water Act. New York City, a founding member of AMWA, is excited for the next 40 years of essential work that AMWA will undertake to safeguard high-quality drinking water."

"The Las Vegas Valley Water District has long recognized the value that AMWA provides to the water industry through its programs and advocacy to foster sustainable, innovative utility management practices. AMWA's proven leadership spanning four decades has provided the guidance and resources necessary to help water utilities reach their full potential." John Entsminger, General Manager, Las Vegas Valley Water District, and AMWA Vice President

"The Boston Water and Sewer Commission has been an active and enthusiastic member of AMWA since the early 1980s. We value and take advantage of all the provided benefits, especially the opportunities to engage with the leaders of the water sector. AMWA has led the sector in security, establishing the WaterISAC in 2002 and engaged early to address climate adaptation needs of the sector by providing us with resources to help us adapt to our ever-changing challenges." John P. Sullivan, Chief Engineer, Boston Water and Sewer Commission, and AMWA Board Member

"EPA has benefitted significantly from partnering with AMWA and its members over the years. AMWA members and staff are leading the way in helping our country achieve the goal of safe water for everyone, and their willingness to share their expertise with EPA and so many others across the water sector is greatly appreciated." Jim Horne, Sustainable Utilities Program Manager, Office of Wastewater Management, U.S. EPA

"Raftelis has been a subscriber for more than 15 years and has had the pleasure of working alongside AMWA staff and members on several initiatives, most notably the INSIGHT financial survey and dashboard and a special survey focused on COVID-19. AMWA has been and continues to be a first-class organization with strong leadership in staff and utility members, and the water sector is fortunate to have AMWA providing critical input and safeguards in policies on traditional and evolving issues." Peiffer Brandt, President and CEO, Raftelis
