The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the U.S. Department of State have released A Guide to Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience, a compendium of infrastructure protection practices based on lessons learned over the previous 15 years. The items discussed in the guide include a list of threats and hazards for critical infrastructure sectors, the steps to develop a critical infrastructure protection plan, and an overview of the risk assessment process.

The document also affirms the water sector’s status as one of the four critical lifeline sectors, sectors for which “reliable operations are so critical that a disruption or loss of one of these functions will directly affect the security and resilience of critical infrastructure within and across numerous sectors.” The interdependent relationship between the water and energy sectors is used to demonstrate the importance of the lifeline sectors.
