Water Sector Shift: A Changing
Workforce Requires New Thinking

Special hotel rate is available until October 7.

Workforce topics take center-stage at AMWA’s 2022 Executive Management Conference. From October 30 to November 2, 2022, leading voices in water will assemble in historic Savannah, Ga., to discuss innovative ways to address recruitment and retention, among other issues, amid a changing sector.

The Great Culture Shift

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them,” said Albert Einstein. The water sector, like other industries, is at a crossroads. On the one hand, the industry is bracing for the “silver tsunami” while combatting the simultaneous wave of resignations with younger workers. However, there has never been a time with more opportunity to make strides in diversifying the workforce, capitalizing on technological advances, and mining data to better serve staff and ratepayers.

During this presentation, participants will hear current industry statistics on the changing water workforce and culture shift occurring in the sector. The discussion will kick off with research findings on the changing water workforce. A panel of utility leaders also will delve into attributes of organizational culture, implementation of culture assessments, setting best practices to result in employee engagement and increased loyalty, and ways to incorporate employees in utility recruitment efforts.

Additional Topics and Activities

Attendees will address other critical topics, including:

  • Organizational development for utility leaders;
  • Environmental climate and ethics;
  • Water affordability;
  • Strategies for securing utility cybersecurity networks; and
  • Perspectives on environmental justice.

The program also includes peer networking, honoring exceptional utility management and individual contributions to the water industry at AMWA's annual awards program, and visiting Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority’s Purrysburg Water Treatment Plant in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
