On May 29, EPA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) submitted its final report containing recommendations for setting a Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) for perchlorate. The final report saw little change from the draft final report from the SAB Perchlorate Advisory Panel and recommends that EPA utilize an enhanced physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to derive an MCLG that would ultimately underpin a perchlorate regulatory decision.
EPA will now move forward with its regulatory process, taking the SAB findings into consideration as it works toward a rule proposal. The current official target for issuing a proposed perchlorate regulation is the end of 2013, though meeting that target continues to appear optimistic due to the amount of analyses and reviews required prior to proposal.
The SAB’s report and other information on the SAB review process are available at the SAB Perchlorate Advisory Panel webpage.
