Mayors from around the world announced their support for a Global Green New Deal and described climate change as “a global climate emergency” in a statement following the 2019 C40 Cities Global Mayors Summit in Copenhagen. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, chair-elect of C40 Cities, stated “(w)hen it comes to climate action, no one is doing more than cities, but no one is doing enough.” The mayors emphasized that they are committed to keeping global heating below the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement and putting climate action at the center of all urban decision-making.

The statement also included expressions of support from the mayors of Philadelphia, Chicago, Portland, Austin, Seattle, and New York City, as well their counterparts on other continents.
