San Francisco Public Utilities Commission issued a $240 million certified climate bond in May for low-carbon water infrastructure projects.  Certified by Sustainalytics under the London-based Climate Bonds Initiative’s water climate standard, the green municipal bond is earmarked for sustainable stormwater management and wastewater projects designed to protect the city’s sewer system from rising sea levels, intense rainstorms and other climate impacts.

The projects are part of a multi-billion dollar effort to upgrade the city’s 100-year-old sewer infrastructure over a 20-year period. Individual projects include integrating green and gray infrastructure to reduce stormwater flows and updating pumping systems and treatment facilities.
