Last week the Water Research Foundation (WaterRF) announced the publication of its latest report, Changes in Water Demand Under Regional Climate Change Scenarios (#4263). The report fills a gap in the climate change literature by helping utilities better understand the impacts of climate change on water demand, rather than from the supply side. It provides case study analyses from geographically diverse regions that discuss the impacts of various climate change scenarios on water demand. For all six case study utilities, an increase in water demand was projected across all climate projection scenarios evaluated. Among the report’s recommendations is that water utilities devote more resources to studying and modeling demand patterns based on climate change projections and weather scenarios.
