AMWA Commemorates 45 Years of Leadership in the Water Sector
This year marks 45 years since AMWA’s founding in 1981, a milestone that celebrates not only the association’s history, but its commitment to strengthening the nation’s largest publicly owned drinking water systems and supporting the executives who lead them.
For more than four decades, AMWA has remained true to its mission: serving as the unified voice for metropolitan water utility leaders, advancing sound federal policy and investment, and fostering knowledge sharing that equips utilities to navigate emerging challenges and protect public health. These two pillar: advocacy and knowledge sharing continue to define AMWA’s role in the sector and its value to members.
As AMWA commemorates this anniversary, the association also honors the utility executives, board members, and partners whose dedication has driven progress across the drinking water sector. From infrastructure investment and treatment innovation to sustainability, climate resilience, cybersecurity, and community engagement, AMWA members have consistently led the way.
Looking ahead, AMWA remains focused on supporting utilities as they confront the next generation of challenges, from affordability and workforce capacity to regulatory complexity, digital transformation, and the accelerating impacts of climate change. The association is proud of the strides made since 1981 and is committed to continuing its work to strengthen the nation’s drinking water systems over the next decades.

Reflections on Our History
“AMWA’s forty‑five years reflect the strength of an association built on a shared commitment to the communities we serve. For more than four decades, AMWA has been at the forefront of major legislative and regulatory developments in drinking water, making sure the nation’s largest public systems are well represented. The challenges facing our sector continue to change, but so does our ability to respond to them together. I’m proud of the role AMWA has played in advancing sound policy and supporting utility leaders across the country.”
Jeff Szabo, Chief Executive Officer, Suffolk County Water Authority, and AMWA President
“When the nation’s largest water utilities speak together through AMWA, we shape federal policy in ways no one system could do alone. That collective strength helps us protect safe, reliable drinking water for the millions of Americans who depend on us every day.”
Calvin Farr, General Manager/CEO, Prince William Water, and AMWA Vice President
"AMWA provides an invaluable forum for collaboration among the nation’s largest water utilities, allowing us to share knowledge, learn from one another’s experiences, and develop solutions to the challenges facing our industry. “For more than 15 years, I have had the privilege of working closely with AMWA and its members on some of the most important issues facing the drinking water sector. Amidst a shifting regulatory and funding landscape, AMWA continues to provide timely and strategic leadership by bringing together utility executives, government and policy leaders, and industry partners to address evolving regulatory, operational, and resiliency challenges impacting public water systems across the country.
AMWA’s ability to foster collaboration, advocate for the interests of drinking water agencies and the sector as a whole, and facilitate meaningful dialogue on critical issues such as PFAS, climate resiliency, infrastructure investment, and water quality standards makes the organization an invaluable voice for the industry.
