An initiative launched in mid-March by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) aims to communicate to the public the reality, risks and need for a response to climate change. The What We Know initiative includes videos, a social media campaign and a report that communicates key scientific messages “for every American” about climate change. “We need to prepare for changes and slow down our emissions because we are heading for a blind curve,” states the narrator of the leading video on the site.

One of the goals of AAAS is to promote “the responsible use of science in public policy” and therefore the What We Know initiative was launched because climate change may be the most “pressing issue intersecting science and society.” AAAS publishes the journal Science.
