AMWA is marking a milestone year while reaffirming its role as the unified voice for the nation’s largest publicly owned drinking water systems. For more than four decades, the association has shaped federal water policy, advanced science‑based regulations, and supported utility leaders in delivering safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water to their communities.
To commemorate the occasion, AMWA will launch a dedicated 45th Anniversary webpage this week, highlighting the association’s history, achievements, and future direction. The theme, “45 Years of Leadership. Focused on What’s Ahead,” reflects the legislative and policy milestones that have shaped the drinking water sector over the past four decades, while also pointing to the opportunities and challenges that will define its next chapter.
The webpage will feature:
- A timeline of AMWA's leadership and advocacy accomplishments over the past 45 years;
- Reflections on the association's role in shaping major water policy and funding initiatives, including programs such as DWSRF and WIFIA;
- Recognition of the members, utility leaders, and partners whose expertise and collaboration have strengthened the water sector; and
- A look ahead at emerging priorities, including PFAS, climate resilience, infrastructure investment, workforce development, and water security.
As part of the anniversary celebration, AMWA will host a 45th Anniversary Reception and Open House on Sunday, June 21, bringing together members, subscribers, partners, and industry leaders to celebrate the association's legacy and the collective achievements that have advanced the drinking water sector over the past four and a half decades.
Looking ahead, AMWA remains committed to providing the advocacy, resources, and peer-to-peer engagement opportunities that help utilities navigate an increasingly complex operating environment. Building on 45 years of leadership, AMWA will continue to elevate the water issues affecting the nation’s largest publicly owned drinking water systems in Washington, support utility management excellence, and advance policies that protect public health and strengthen community resilience.
The association looks forward to celebrating this milestone with its members, subscribers, and partners while working together to address the sector's most pressing challenges and opportunities in the decades ahead.
