In a September 22 memorandum to state environmental commissioners and water directors (and accompanying blog post), EPA’s Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water Joel Beauvais issued a “renewed call to action to reduce nutrient pollution and support for incremental actions to protect water quality and public health.” Focusing on the continuing challenges posed by nutrient pollution and resulting harmful algal blooms, the six-page memorandum stresses the need for intensifying pollution reduction efforts for all sources and summarizes EPA’s plans for assisting stakeholders in those efforts. Existing documents, data and tools designed to help address a variety of nutrient pollution issues are also highlighted throughout the memorandum.
