The House of Representatives concluded its work for the summer and departed Washington for the annual August recess on July 25, and the Senate was expected to follow as early as July 31. Both chambers will be back in session on September 9 for what is expected to be a busy few weeks in the leadup to the new fiscal year on October 1.

Also on the fall agenda is the completion of an FY20 defense policy bill, which is likely to contain riders pertaining to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination and cleanup. Congressional staffers will remain engaged in PFAS discussions throughout August, and AMWA will continue to advocate for policies that protect public health without imposing undue burdens on drinking water systems and ratepayers.
