Legislation to update SDWA’s requirement that drinking water systems mail each customer a paper copy of their consumer confidence report (CCR) each year will be strongly promoted by its sponsor, Congressman C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.), after Congress returns from its August recess, members of his staff have told AMWA.
The “End Unnecessary Costs Caused by Report Mailing Act” (H.R. 1340) would give most drinking water utilities the option of distributing their CCRs electronically. Utilities would still have to provide customers with paper CCRs upon request, and any utility that incurred a federal MCL violation during the time period covered by the report would still have to send the document to all customers by postal mail. AMWA’s board of directors formally endorsed the legislation in June.
Rep. Young’s staff is currently communicating with staff of the House Energy and Commerce Committee to plot out a path for action on the bill during the 112th Congress. After Congress returns from the August recess Rep. Young hopes to attract more cosponsors to the bill and set it up for possible committee consideration.
In support this effort AMWA is collecting data on how much money drinking water utilities typically spend to print and mail their CCRs each year. If you are able to share such information about your utility, please contact AMWA’s Dan Hartnett at [email protected].
