On February 19, EPA announced the wide release of its new Drinking Water Mapping Application to Protect Source Waters (DWMAPS). DWMAPS is designed as an easy-to-use tool that “can provide drinking water professionals, Source Water Collaboratives, watershed groups, and others with information to update source water assessments and prioritize source water protection measures in any location or watershed in the country.” Information on source water locations, water quality and potential contaminant sources is available through DWMAPS to inform source water protection efforts for both utilities and their customers. However, in response to security concerns expressed by utilities and water sector associations (including AMWA) during the DWMAPS development process, detailed information on locations of public water system intakes is not available through the application.
