This month EPA released a new Class VI Guidance Document, Geologic Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide: Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program Class VI Implementation Manual for UIC Program Directors. Under the UIC program, Class VI wells are those used solely for geologic sequestration of CO2. The document covers all stages of a project’s development from pre-permitting to site closure and gives guidance on a director’s responsibilities throughout.

In 2010, EPA established a new class of injection wells (Class VI) under its Federal Requirements Under the Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program for Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Geologic Sequestration (GS) Wells.  The requirements set the minimum technical criteria for protecting underground sources of drinking water.
