Updates to EPA’s Protective Action Guide (PAG) manual, published on January 11, revise guidance that can be used to assist in drinking water system recovery following a significant radiological incident. By identifying the doses of radiation that should be avoided following an incident, the PAG provides guidance on when safety measures, such as the provision of alternate sources of drinking water, should be undertaken. The guidelines are meant to be a reference applicable only in emergency situations and do not reflect the procedures necessary to fully restore drinking water to meet all applicable Safe Drinking Water Act standards necessary for long-term recovery and operation.
