In 2014, critical infrastructure owners and operators will be asked by the federal government to voluntarily adopt a Cybersecurity Framework for improving their cybersecurity awareness and protection. Essentially a set of best practices that can be mapped to existing consensus standards, the Framework is being developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) per Presidential Executive Order 13636: Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.

On August 28, NIST released a discussion draft of the Framework and is seeking feedback from owners and operators, experts and practitioners. NIST is also hosting a workshop in Dallas September 11-13 to review the draft and collect feedback.

The draft, related materials and information on the workshop are available on the NIST website. Members who provide comment on the draft, attend the workshop or have any questions are asked to contact AMWA’s Michael Arceneaux (202-331-2820, [email protected]).
