A recent GAO report, Climate Change: Energy Infrastructure Risks and Adaptation Efforts, highlights the vulnerability of electricity generation infrastructure to extreme weather events and water shortages. The report notes that although the federal government does not directly work on adapting energy infrastructure to climate change, it can influence private entities’ adaptation decisions via research, market incentives and disincentives and regulatory oversight.
