New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s administration announced it will ban hydraulic fracturing in the state because of concerns over health risks. In a letter transmitting the state’s public health review of the practice, New York’s acting commissioner of health said the overall weight of evidence demonstrates significant uncertainties about the adverse health outcomes and likelihoods of these outcomes. Given the information gaps, the health department recommends that high volume fracking not proceed in New York. As a result, the state Department of Environmental Conservation plans to issue legally binding findings to prohibit fracking in New York.
