The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and the Federal Railroad Administration are seeking comments on proposed changes to improve the safety of the rail transportation of flammable materials, specifically ethanol and crude oil. Recent train accidents, which in some cases have spilled toxic materials into waterways and have threatened water supplies, have led to calls for better regulation to protect communities. Comments on the proposed changes are due by September 30, 2014.
