The Department of Homeland Security Office of Cyber and Infrastructure Analysis (OCIA) has published an analysis of the impacts of rising sea level in the Norfolk, Virginia area. According to OCIA’s findings, sea level rise will inundate some urban areas in Hampton Roads in the next 50 years. Under a Category 3 hurricane scenario, up to 731,000 people are at risk (baseline), which then increases to over 815,600 by 2065. Sea level rise alone is unlikely to flood drinking water or wastewater facilities within the next 50 years; however, increased nuisance floods are possible. Sea level rise will increase the vulnerability of electric power substations and water infrastructure during hurricanes.
