The Center for Climate Integrity, engineering firm Resilient Analytics, and GIS researchers from the University of Colorado released a new study, High Tide Tax: The Price to Protect Coastal Communities from Rising Seas, examining the cost of sea level rise within the United States. The report, using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, estimates that the United States will experience $400 billion in sea-level rise impacts over the next 20 years. Of the jurisdictions affected, 130 counties will experience impacts costing $1 billion while 14 states will face at least $10 million in potential damages. The center, known for its advocacy for action on climate change, touts the report as the “first-ever estimate of the costs of coastal defenses for the tidal shoreline of the contiguous United States.”
