President Obama will submit his FY17 budget request to Congress on Tuesday, formally kicking off the annual appropriations process.  While congressional Republicans are expected to largely set aside the President’s request, the document will still set the tone for the spending debates that will unfold over the coming months.

Senators this week will attempt to reach a bipartisan deal on financial assistance to help Flint, Michigan address its lead crisis, including the removal of lead pipes, with hopes of attaching the deal to an energy policy bill lined up for a final vote.  Senators will also consider a bill to toughen sanctions on North Korea.

In the House of Representatives lawmakers are expected to consider a bill to alter federal nutrition disclosure rules for restaurants and another bill requiring the National Science Foundation to provide additional information about the scientific merits of projects selected for grant awards.
