In conjunction with EPA’s release of its Drinking Water Action Plan, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) released the executive summary of an upcoming comprehensive report on how science and technology could be more effectively used to ensure safe drinking water. The PCAST report provides both near- and long-term recommendations that, when implemented in conjunction with EPA’s Action Plan, are seen as critical to developing the next generation of drinking water systems and oversight practices. Near-term recommendations focus on monitoring, data analytics, data collection using citizen science, and advanced technologically education. Longer-term recommendations include better coordinated research, development and demonstration of next-generation technologies, and support for more comprehensive comparative–risk-assessment methods and capacity. The PCAST’s full report is expected to be released in the coming months.
