Congress returns to Washington from its holiday recess this week, and House lawmakers are expected to vote on H.R. 2279, legislation that seeks to limit some EPA authority under the Superfund law.

Among other provisions, the bill would stop litigation that would force EPA to set a schedule for promulgating regulations on the management of coal ash and would increase state input on which contaminated sites are added to the National Priorities List that guides Superfund cleanups.

In the Senate, a vote is expected this week on legislation to extend expired unemployment benefits.
