The House and Senate Appropriations Committees each approved their versions of legislation to fund the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the next fiscal year, with Senators offering a significant funding boost to the agency.

The Senate’s draft FY14 Commerce-Justice-Science spending bill would provide $5.6 billion to NOAA – about $200 million more than the Obama administration’s request. In contrast, the bill approved by the House Appropriations Committee would provide the agency with just $4.9 billion – roughly $500 million below the President’s request and $89 million below NOAA’s FY13 funding level.
