The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) would experience a slight funding reduction next year under an FY14 appropriations bill released by a House subcommittee last week.

The draft FY14 Commerce-Justice-Science spending bill would provide NOAA with $4.9 billion next year, $89 million below its fiscal year 2013 enacted level. But according to a summaryprovided by House lawmakers, the measure would fund National Weather Service operations and systems “above the President’s request.” The bill also includes full funding for satellite programs that are “essential to maintain and improve weather forecasting to warn communities about potentially devastating natural disasters.”

Senate appropriators are drafting their own Commerce-Justice-Science spending bill and could vote on it as early as this week.
