AMWA was one of ten stakeholder organizations to write to Congress last week in support of S.2388, the Water Infrastructure Modernization Act of 2025. The letter, addressed to leadership on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, encourages lawmakers to include the legislation in any water infrastructure packages that they advance this Congress.
As explained in the letter, the Water Infrastructure Modernization Act, or WIMA, would amend existing law to establish a $50 million dollar grant program for the adoption and deployment of intelligent water technologies. This would include tools for water loss identification, pipe integrity assessment, leak detection, and severe weather preparedness.
“Intelligent systems that detect leaks, monitor pipe integrity, reduce non-revenue water loss, and optimize treatment operations can extend asset life, reduce operating costs, and increase utility efficiency,” the letter states. “Investment in intelligent technologies provides improved service and affordability of such services. At the same time, the small investment provided by S. 2388 will leverage federal investments by stretching the annual appropriations provided to the states and local communities.”
AMWA and other coalition partners will continue to work with Congress to ensure that, as any water infrastructure packages develop, they are inclusive of bills like WIMA that respond to the long standing and documented needs of community water systems.
