AMWA announced last week that Chief Policy Officer Dan Hartnett has been appointed to serve as Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2026. The appointment marks a significant leadership moment for the association as the Board of Directors prepares to launch a national search for AMWA’s next CEO.

Hartnett, a familiar and trusted voice across the drinking water sector, joined AMWA in 2007 as a Legislative Assistant and has since held several senior roles, including Manager of Legislative Affairs, Director of Legislative Affairs, Chief Advocacy Officer, and most recently Chief Policy Officer. Over nearly two decades, he has shaped AMWA’s federal policy agenda and represented the nation’s largest publicly owned drinking water systems before Congress and federal agencies. His earlier experience on Capitol Hill, serving former Representative Rob Simmons of Connecticut, adds a strong legislative foundation to his leadership approach.

AMWA Board President Jeff Szabo, CEO of Suffolk County Water Authority, emphasized the Board’s confidence in Hartnett’s ability to guide the association through this transition. “Dan is highly respected across the water community and brings a deep understanding of the issues facing large drinking water systems,” Szabo said. “His policy expertise, steady leadership, and strong relationships with federal partners make him exceptionally well‑suited to guide AMWA during this transition.”

As Interim CEO, Hartnett will oversee executive leadership across AMWA’s operations, programs, and policy initiatives. He noted his commitment to continuity and member engagement during this period. “It is an honor to serve AMWA and our members during this transition, and I am grateful to the Board for trusting me with this responsibility,” Hartnett said. “My focus is to keep the association moving forward and to support utility leaders as they navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. I look forward to listening to our members and subscribers and working with AMWA’s talented staff to ensure we continue delivering value and momentum in the months ahead.”

AMWA will soon begin the process of selecting a search firm to support the search for a permanent CEO. Throughout the transition, AMWA’s staff will continue advancing the association’s mission and delivering high‑value resources and support to members.
