Later this year, AMWA will undertake its third biannual Utility Financial Information (UFI) survey. The survey is a tool for water executives to maximize financial planning and performance with timely, relevant industry data they can apply to critical financial issues impacting their utilities. Surveys conducted in 2008 and 2010 produced a unique and valuable data source for tailored water utility financial planning and benchmarking.

More than a rate survey, the UFI program also addresses water agencies’ revenue sources, expense categories and trends over time in these parameters. The availability of comparative data from peer water utilities allows water managers to better understand cost drivers and identify different funding alternatives.

The survey tool is currently being reviewed and updated with input from prior participants and members AMWA’s Utility Management Committee. The 2012 survey will be launched in September, and utilities that took part in the 2010 survey will receive a form pre-populated with their earlier responses, so they need only update answers that have changed. The survey deadline will be mid-November and results will be available in January 2013.
