Washington, D.C. – The Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA) has released its 2024 Annual Report, highlighting the association’s accomplishments in advocacy and knowledge sharing, its two pillars outlined in its 2023-2025 Strategic Plan to support the nation’s largest drinking water systems.

Coming off the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, AMWA remains committed to advancing policies that safeguard water utilities and providing resources that strengthen utility leadership and operations. AMWA’s 2024 Annual Report showcases the association’s strides on Capitol Hill, advocating for long-term federal funding for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP) and increased federal investment in water infrastructure. The association also worked to protect utilities from PFAS-related CERCLA liability, advanced cybersecurity resilience, and launched the Legislative Action Center, its web-based tool fostering member engagement with lawmakers.

On the regulatory front, AMWA staff met with over 40 Bident Administration officials and provided comments to EPA and other federal agencies on key issues, including the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements. AMWA also challenged EPA on the agency’s process for the development of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for several PFAS final rule, and whether it is consistent with the statutory requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

“AMWA’s advocacy efforts continue to elevate the voice of water utilities, ensuring that federal policies support the resilience of our nation’s drinking water systems,” said AMWA CEO Tom Dobbins, CAE. “Through strategic engagement with policymakers, EPA, and other regulatory agencies, we are making real progress on the challenges that matter most to our members.”

In addition to policy leadership, AMWA strengthened its knowledge-sharing initiatives by convening record-breaking Water Policy and Executive Management conferences, monthly webinars on top-of-mind topics, and quarterly all-member meetings to discuss emerging issues. The association also launched its INSIGHT utility financial survey and recognized utilities and leaders for utility management excellence.

AMWA remains dedicated to ensuring that water utilities have the resources, policy support, and expert insights needed to thrive.
